Hello all,
This story (Coach Fired Over Blue Lines) came across my desk recently and I thought I would just throw my two cents in on the subject.
The story starts with a promotional hockey team program sold at two home games a month ago to raise money for the team. The player biographies were written or generated in such a way as to make fun of each other using ‘offensive and derogatory’ language.
An excerpt of one of the biographies is as follows:
“Mistified and confused by women, Danny plans on attending NSCC to graduate with a nursing degree to better help him understand the female anatomy. When he’s not at the rink, you’ll find him on the golf course, or exposing his ‘Balls of Fury’ at the ping pong tables. Sadly, we have learned that Danny was absolutely devastated upon hearing Celine Dion had cancelled her Halifax show.”
As you can see above, the above is not the typical player biography, however, I believe this is where this story gets blown completely out of proportion.
The principal of the school in question is then quoted as saying:
“As the principal of Lockview High School, I am accountable for ensuring that all communication associated with our school is held to the highest standard. I should have seen this program and signed off on its content before it went to print. I did not. I say this not to pass blame but rather to personally accept responsibility.”
This being said, the administration has decided to fire the volunteer coach instead of the person accountable, by their own admission.
I believe that this is just a way for the school system to not shift responsibility to a volunteer instead of actually taking responsibility for their actions, or in this case, their inaction.
By showing the children that whenever something bad happens, there is always someone else to blame, we are basically teaching our children to be bullies. I know that some of you may not agree with that statement, but I see the principal dismissing the coach is just a form of bullying. It is just showing the children that it is okay to fire someone who has spent a lot of his spare time coaching and training a group of young men into a team with price and confidence at its core. A team that is said to give back to the community in many ways, including sponsoring a family at Christmas and participating in toy drives for needy families.
But apparently, none of this matters when a little bit of public outcry happens. It just goes to show how inadequate the school system is when it bows to public pressure from the vocal minority.
